Veer-Zaara: Been there, seen that TEENA MALIK
TIMESOFINDIA.COM[ MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004 01:45:26 PM ]
They said it was the biggest movie of the year, so I went for it. They said it was vintage Yash Chopra after six years, so I went for it. Now, after having wasted three and half hours of a well-deserved holiday, all I can see is red. icon_biggrin.gif
Why am I upset? Because I feel cheated. There was nothing new in movie, and literally.
Sample this - SRK is sitting with Kiron Kher's hand - as in holding her hand - and says something like, I haven't come here to take your daughter away without your will, blah blah.
Suddenly a bell starts clanging in my head - haven't I heard SRK saying the same thing, in the same way to Farida Jalal for Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge ?
The movie opens with a wide angle shot of sarson ke khet , and lush green forests and silver waterfalls - very pretty I agree - but I have seen that before in Silsila . icon_razz.gif
Even Preity's outfits were oh-so-familiar. Remember Madhuri Nene nee Dixit and her salwar-kameezes in Dil To Pagal Hai ? icon_razz.gif
Should we go on? Why is it that in most of Yashji's movies, the hero-heroine realise they love each other (usually the heroine) once they have parted ways?
We had Kajol realising her pyar for SRK and imagining the entire gaana ( Ho gaya hai tujhko to pyar ) in DDLJ. Similarly, Veer-Zaara has Preity imagining SRK sing Main yahan .
If that's not enough, the heroine's father in Chopra films is always the strictest of strict while the hero's father is always gung-ho. icon_razz.gif If Anupam Kher is all for his son claiming the bride, it's no different with Amitabh Bachchan in this.
We could go on, but reliving the movie is horrifying. Dear Yashji, you have made some love stories to remember.
But Veer-Zaara is no legend. If I have to see snatches of your earlier movies, I'd much rather see the originals than sit through 210 minutes of deja vu
